Use a Plunger

4

Place a flat-bottomed cup plunger over the drain opening, ensure 2-3 inches of standing water covers the plunger cup, and plunge vigorously 15-20 times. Check if water drains freely and repeat as needed.

Why It Works

Plunging creates alternating pressure and suction in the drainpipe, which dislodges clogs by pushing and pulling the blockage until it breaks apart or moves through. Effective on soft obstructions like food buildup and grease plugs.

Steps

  1. Remove the sink strainer or stopper
  2. If you have a double sink, block the second drain with a wet rag to maintain pressure
  3. Fill the sink with enough water to submerge the plunger cup
  4. Place the plunger squarely over the drain and pump firmly 15-20 times
  5. Pull the plunger off sharply on the last stroke to break suction
  6. Test drainage and repeat if needed

Tips

  • Use a flat cup plunger, not a flange plunger (which is designed for toilets)
  • Sealing the overflow opening and the second drain on a double sink is critical for generating enough force
  • A thin layer of petroleum jelly on the plunger rim improves the seal on smooth sinks
