Use a Drain Snake or Auger

4

Feed a drain snake (also called a plumber's auger) into the drain opening or P-trap cleanout, rotate the handle to break through the clog, and pull out the debris. This is the most reliable DIY method for stubborn blockages that plunging cannot clear.

Steps

  1. Remove the drain strainer or stopper
  2. Insert the snake cable into the drain and push until you feel resistance
  3. Crank the handle clockwise to bore into the clog
  4. Push and rotate until the cable moves freely, indicating the blockage has cleared
  5. Pull the snake out slowly, cleaning off debris as it emerges
  6. Run hot water for one minute to flush remaining material

Why It Works

The flexible steel cable physically reaches into the pipe to break apart or retrieve the obstruction. Unlike chemical or pressure methods, a snake directly contacts and removes the clog material. Effective on compacted food, grease plugs, and objects lodged in the pipe.

Tips

  • A 15-25 foot hand-crank snake ($15-30) handles most kitchen sink clogs
  • Feed the cable gently to avoid scratching or puncturing older pipes
  • If the clog is in the P-trap, place a bucket underneath and remove the P-trap first for easier access
  • Clean and dry the snake after each use to prevent rust
