Break Paint Seals
4
When layers of paint seal a window sash to its frame, score the paint joint carefully with a utility knife or a dedicated paint zipper tool rather than prying the window open by force. Run the blade along the seam where the sash meets the stop on both sides and across the top, cutting through the paint film to free the sash.
Why It Works
Paint applied over a closed window bonds the sash to the frame as it dries. Scoring this bond with a sharp blade breaks the seal without stressing the glass or cracking the wood. Forcing the window with a pry bar risks shattering the glass or splitting the frame.
Tips
- Use a paint zipper tool for a cleaner, more controlled cut along the seam
- Score from both the interior and exterior sides if accessible
- After freeing the sash, lightly sand the painted edges and apply a thin coat of wax to prevent re-bonding
- Avoid slamming the window open once freed, as the frame may still be fragile from old paint layers
