Clean the Tracks
5
Remove all dirt, dust, and debris from the window tracks using a stiff brush or vacuum with a crevice attachment, then wipe the tracks down with a damp cloth. Built-up grime in the channels is one of the most common and easily fixed causes of sticking windows, especially sliding and single-hung styles.
Why It Works
Window tracks collect dust, pet hair, dead insects, and outdoor grit over months of use. This debris compacts into the channel and physically blocks the sash or sliding panel from moving freely. Clearing it out restores the smooth surface the window was designed to glide on.
Tips
- Use an old toothbrush or a narrow detailing brush to reach corners where debris compacts
- For stubborn grime, spray a small amount of all-purpose cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing
- Vacuum the tracks first to remove loose material before wiping with a damp cloth
- Follow up by applying a thin coat of silicone spray to keep the clean tracks operating smoothly
