What to Do

This treatment is administered by a dermatologist in-clinic. A chemical sensitizer (DPCP or SADBE) is applied to the scalp to deliberately provoke a mild allergic reaction. Treatments are applied weekly with gradually increasing concentrations.

Why It Works

Topical immunotherapy redirects the immune system's attention away from hair follicles by creating a competing immune response (contact dermatitis) on the scalp surface. It is one of the most effective treatments for extensive alopecia areata affecting more than 50% of the scalp.
