Do not rub your eyes — it worsens the itch

5

What to Do

Resist the urge to rub itchy eyes. Instead, apply a cold compress or use allergy eye drops for relief.

Why It Works

Rubbing mechanically degranulates mast cells in the conjunctiva, releasing more histamine and making the itch, redness, and swelling significantly worse. It creates a vicious cycle: itch → rub → more histamine → worse itch. Rubbing can also cause corneal micro-abrasions and, with chronic rubbing, contribute to keratoconus (corneal thinning).

Tips

  • Cold compresses provide instant itch relief without the histamine rebound
  • If the urge is overwhelming, gently press (do not rub) on closed eyelids with cool fingers
  • Keep allergy eye drops within reach as a substitute action
  • Teach children this rule early — they are especially prone to eye rubbing
