Avoid first-generation antihistamines like Benadryl for daily use
5
What to Do
Do not use diphenhydramine (Benadryl), chlorpheniramine, or other first-generation antihistamines as your daily allergy medication. Reserve them only for acute allergic reactions.
Why It Works
First-generation antihistamines cross the blood-brain barrier and cause significant sedation, impaired cognition, and slowed reaction times — comparable to being legally intoxicated. They last only 4-6 hours, requiring multiple daily doses. Studies show impaired driving and work performance even when users do not feel drowsy.
Tips
- Second-generation options (cetirizine, loratadine, fexofenadine) are equally or more effective with far fewer side effects
- Benadryl is linked to increased dementia risk with long-term use in older adults
- The AAP recommends against routine use in children
