Use OTC pseudoephedrine for stubborn congestion

3

What to Do

Add pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, sold behind the pharmacy counter) for nasal congestion that antihistamines alone cannot relieve. Take 30-60mg every 4-6 hours as needed.

Why It Works

Pseudoephedrine is an oral decongestant that constricts blood vessels in the nasal passages, reducing swelling and opening airways. It is the only effective oral decongestant available OTC. Antihistamines treat itch, sneeze, and runny nose but do little for congestion.

Tips

  • Available behind the pharmacy counter (ID required) but no prescription needed
  • Avoid if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or glaucoma
  • Do not use for more than 7-10 consecutive days
  • Phenylephrine (the shelf version in Sudafed PE) was found to be no more effective than placebo
