Hoop-supported insect netting and row covers

5

Row covers and insect netting draped over hoops create a physical barrier against flying pests while allowing light, air, and water to pass through. This is the primary organic pest control method for brassicas, leafy greens, and root vegetables that attract cabbage moths, flea beetles, carrot flies, and leaf miners. Use lightweight spun-bond row cover (Agribon AG-19 or similar, $15-25 for a 10x25-foot roll) for general pest exclusion with 85% light transmission. For stronger insect blocking, use fine mesh insect netting (0.6-1.0mm openings, brands: ProtekNet, Wondermesh) that blocks even tiny thrips and whiteflies while maintaining 90%+ light transmission. Create hoops from 1/2-inch PVC pipe (cut to 5-6 foot lengths, bend into arches), 9-gauge wire, or commercial hoop clips that snap onto raised bed edges. Secure row cover edges with clips, bricks, or by burying in soil outside the bed. For metal raised beds, use specialized hoop clips designed for metal edges. Remove covers during flowering for crops requiring pollination (squash, cucumbers, peppers) unless hand-pollinating.
