Keep new seed consistently moist for 2 to 3 weeks
5
What to Do
Water newly seeded areas lightly 2-3 times per day for the first 2-3 weeks. The goal is to keep the top half-inch of soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once seedlings reach 2 inches, transition to deeper, less frequent watering.
Why It Works
Grass seed must absorb moisture to trigger germination, and the emerging seedling has virtually no root system. Even a few hours of dryness can kill a germinating seed. Consistent moisture is non-negotiable for successful establishment.
Tips
- Set a timer or use a hose-end sprinkler on a basic timer to avoid forgetting.
- Watering should be gentle — a strong spray washes seed away.
- Perennial ryegrass germinates in 5-7 days; Kentucky bluegrass takes 14-21 days. Fescue falls in between at 7-14 days.
