Apply starter fertilizer at seeding time
4
What to Do
When seeding bare patches, apply a starter fertilizer with elevated phosphorus (e.g., 10-18-10 or 18-24-12) at the time of seeding according to the bag rate.
Why It Works
Phosphorus is critical for root development in new seedlings. Starter fertilizers provide an immediately available dose that helps seedlings establish a root system quickly. Mature grass has deep enough roots to access existing soil phosphorus, but shallow new roots benefit from having it right at the surface.
Tips
- Check your soil test first — many soils already have adequate phosphorus.
- Several states restrict lawn phosphorus application; new seedings are typically an allowed exception.
- Do not use a weed-and-feed product when seeding — the herbicide will kill your new seedlings.
