Do not attempt DIY treatment on active infestations
5
What to Do
If you discover an active termite infestation, call a licensed professional rather than attempting DIY treatment. Use the time before the appointment to get quotes from 2-3 companies and research their reputations.
Why It Works
University extension services and the EPA consistently state that termite control is not a DIY project. The best products (Sentricon, professional-grade Termidor) are restricted to licensed professionals. Proper application requires trenching around the foundation, drilling through concrete, and pumping 100+ gallons of termiticide — equipment and expertise beyond consumer capability. Incomplete treatment creates a false sense of security while damage continues.
Tips
- Consumer bait stations now carry warnings: "Not recommended as sole protection against termites"
- Store-bought termite sprays cannot create a continuous barrier and will not protect the structure
- What homeowners CAN do: prevention, annual inspections, and monitoring for signs
- Do not panic — termites work slowly and a few weeks of decision-making will not cause meaningful additional damage
