Match specific strains to specific conditions
5
Choose probiotic supplements based on the specific strain studied for your condition, not by brand name or CFU count. Benefits demonstrated for one strain cannot be assumed for another, even within the same species.
Why It Works
Probiotic effects are deeply strain-specific. Cytokine production, immunomodulatory activities, and effects on the nervous system are all expressed at the strain level. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG has different clinical effects than other L. rhamnosus strains. The evidence base is built on specific strains, not genera.
Tips
- S. boulardii CNCM I-745 (Florastor) — strongest evidence for antibiotic-associated and traveler's diarrhea
- B. infantis 35624 (Align) — studied specifically for IBS global symptom relief
- L. rhamnosus GG (Culturelle) — one of the most studied strains overall
- VSL#3 / Visbiome — most studied multi-strain formulation for pouchitis and UC
- Look for the full strain designation on the label (letters and numbers after the species name)
