Learn the key 2026 rule changes
4
The 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook, effective January 1, 2026, introduced several important updates that all players should know.
Major Changes
- Rally scoring game point: The game-winning point can now be scored by either the serving or receiving team. Previously, you had to be serving to win
- Out call timing: Out calls must now be made before the opponent hits the ball or before the ball becomes dead. You can no longer wait to see what happens
- Serve clarity: The words "clear" and "clearly" were added to volley serve requirements, meaning borderline serves are now faults
- Adaptive play: Formal adaptive standing division established. Eligible players may let the ball bounce twice
Tips
- The out call timing change is the most impactful for recreational play — call it immediately or play on
- The rally scoring change mostly affects competitive leagues and tournaments
