Start with a basic windowsill setup

4

A south-facing window with 4+ hours of direct sunlight is enough to grow your first tray of microgreens for under $50. This is the simplest way to start.

What You Need

  • 2-4 shallow trays (10x20 standard 1020 trays, ~$4 each)
  • Growing medium (coconut coir block, ~$15)
  • Untreated microgreen seeds (radish or broccoli to start, ~$10)
  • Spray bottle (~$5)
  • A cover tray and 5-10 lb weight for germination

Tips

  • Rotate trays daily since directional light causes plants to lean toward the window
  • Limited to 1-2 trays at a time due to window space
  • Not ideal for year-round growing in northern climates where winter light is weak
  • Best varieties for windowsill: radish, broccoli, mustard (fast-growing, forgiving)
