Follow the basic seed-to-harvest process

5

Every microgreen grow follows the same eight-step workflow, typically taking 7-14 days from seed to plate.

Steps

  1. Pre-soak large seeds only (peas, sunflower, beets) for 8-12 hours. Small seeds like radish and broccoli skip this step
  2. Prepare medium — fill tray with 1-1.5 inches of moist coconut coir or soil. Level and lightly compact
  3. Spread seeds evenly across the surface. Do not cover with additional medium
  4. Mist lightly with a spray bottle
  5. Weighted blackout — cover with an inverted tray, add 5-10 lbs of weight. Leave 2-4 days in darkness
  6. Transition to light — remove weight and cover once seedlings push up 1-2 inches. Move to light source
  7. Grow phase — provide 12-16 hours of light daily, bottom water once roots establish, check moisture twice daily
  8. Harvest — cut just above the medium with sharp scissors when first true leaves appear (1-3 inches tall)

Tips

  • Most failures come from overwatering. The medium should be damp, never waterlogged
  • Use filtered water if possible. Ideal pH is 5.5-6.5
