Keep appropriate flock size/ratio
3
Maintain a small, stable flock with a balanced gender ratio. A single gander paired with 2-4 geese is typically the quietest configuration. Avoid keeping multiple ganders together unless you have enough geese to prevent competition — a ratio of 1 gander per 3-4 geese works well.
Why It Works
Competing ganders generate significant noise through territorial disputes, especially during mating season (February-June). Each additional gander increases the likelihood of confrontations, dominance displays, and the associated loud honking that accompanies them.
Tips
- Start with a trio (1 gander, 2 geese) if you are new to keeping geese
- Rehome extra ganders early rather than waiting for aggression and noise to escalate
- A stable flock that has been together for months is noticeably quieter than one with frequent additions
