Prevent and treat Bumblefoot
4
Inspect goose footpads weekly for redness, swelling, or black scabs -- early signs of bumblefoot (pododermatitis). Remove sharp objects from the range area, keep bedding dry, and provide soft ground cover. If a lesion appears, soak the foot in warm Epsom salt solution for 10-15 minutes, clean the wound with betadine, apply antibiotic ointment, and bandage with vet wrap.
Why It Works
Bumblefoot starts when Staphylococcus bacteria enter through small cuts on the footpad. Geese are particularly prone due to their heavy, flat-footed gait. Catching it at the early redness stage avoids the need for surgical intervention that advanced cases require.
Tips
- Replace wet or compacted bedding at least twice a week
- Avoid gravel or rough concrete in high-traffic goose areas
- Seek veterinary help if swelling does not improve within 5-7 days of home treatment
