Ensure clean water and environment
5
Provide fresh drinking water daily in containers that geese cannot foul with mud or droppings. Scrub waterers with a brush every 1-2 days. Replace bedding before it becomes damp or compacted, and rake range areas to remove accumulated droppings. Position water stations away from feed to reduce contamination.
Why It Works
Dirty water is a primary transmission route for coccidiosis, E. coli, and other bacterial infections in waterfowl. Geese naturally dunk their heads and dabble, contaminating standing water quickly. Frequent cleaning breaks the fecal-oral cycle that drives most common goose diseases.
Tips
- Use nipple drinkers or elevated trough-style waterers to reduce fouling
- Place waterers on wire mesh or gravel pads to prevent mud buildup around drinking areas
- Deep-clean the shelter with a 10% bleach solution monthly, allowing it to dry fully before restocking bedding
