Select African Geese
4
Raise African geese for a large, distinctive meat bird. Recognized by the prominent knob on their beak, African geese reach 18-22 lbs at maturity and produce well-proportioned carcasses. They are active foragers that thrive on pasture.
Why It Works
African geese grow quickly and carry good body mass relative to feed consumed. They also lay 20-40 eggs per year, providing dual-purpose value. Their alert, vocal nature doubles as a property alarm system.
Tips
- Protect the beak knob from frostbite in climates with harsh winters using sheltered housing
- Use their vocal tendencies as an advantage for predator alerts, but consider neighbor proximity
- Provide access to swimming water to keep plumage in good condition for clean processing
