Convert Rabbit Hutches for Quail

4

Repurpose a standard rabbit hutch by replacing or overlaying any existing wire with 1/2" hardware cloth to prevent escapes and block small predators. Verify that all door openings close flush and add weather protection to any fully exposed wire sections.

Why It Works

Rabbit hutches already provide a solid shelter area and a wire-floor section, closely matching what quail need. The enclosed portion gives birds a dark, sheltered space for laying and resting, while the wire section provides ventilation and light. Conversion costs a fraction of building from scratch.

Tips

  • Reinforce door latches with carabiners or slide bolts, as original hutch latches are often flimsy
  • Add a removable dropping tray beneath the wire floor section for easier cleaning
  • Ensure ventilation gaps exist near the roofline of the enclosed section to prevent ammonia buildup
