Use Wire Cages with Solid Floor Area

5

Build or purchase wire cages using 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth for flooring and 1" x 1/2" mesh for walls and top. Include a solid resting area made of wood or plastic to prevent foot injuries, and slope the wire floor slightly forward so eggs roll out for easy collection. Allow at least 1 square foot per bird.

Why It Works

Wire floors let droppings fall through into collection trays below, keeping birds clean and reducing ammonia buildup. The solid resting section protects feet from prolonged wire contact, preventing bumblefoot. Sloped floors automate egg collection, reducing disturbance to the flock.

Tips

  • Place dropping trays underneath and clean them every 2-3 days to control odor and flies
  • Cover the solid resting area with removable material for easy washing
  • Use cage clips rather than wire ties for stronger, longer-lasting joints
