Provide Supplemental Calcium for Layers
5
Offer crushed oyster shell or limestone grit free-choice in a separate container for all laying quail. This allows hens to self-regulate calcium intake beyond what the layer feed provides, preventing calcium depletion and soft-shelled eggs.
Why It Works
Laying quail use substantial calcium reserves to produce eggshells daily. While layer feeds contain calcium, individual birds vary in their needs based on laying rate and metabolism. Free-choice supplementation lets each hen consume exactly what she requires without over-supplementing birds that need less.
Tips
- Never mix calcium supplements directly into the main feed — always offer separately
- Use crushed oyster shell sized for quail (finer than what is sold for chickens)
- Replace the calcium dish weekly to keep it clean and dry
