Offer Limited Treats
4
Supplement the main diet with small amounts of treats such as mealworms, leafy greens, or chopped vegetables. Keep treats to no more than 10% of total daily food intake to ensure quail consume enough nutritionally balanced feed.
Why It Works
Treats provide behavioral enrichment and encourage natural foraging instincts, which reduces stress and aggression in confined flocks. Mealworms add extra protein, while greens like dandelion leaves and chopped kale supply vitamins and minerals. Variety in diet can also improve feather quality and overall bird health.
Tips
- Avoid toxic foods: avocado, raw beans, citrus peels, chocolate, and anything spoiled or moldy
- Offer treats in the afternoon after birds have eaten their main feed in the morning
- Mealworms (live or dried) are especially useful as a protein boost during molting periods
