Transition to Game Bird Layer Feed (6+ Weeks)
5
Switch laying quail to a commercial game bird layer feed with 20-24% protein around 6 weeks of age. Game bird layer feeds are formulated with the correct protein-to-calcium ratio for sustained egg production. Some high-protein chicken layer feeds (20%+) can work as a substitute, but game bird-specific formulas are preferred.
Why It Works
Once quail reach sexual maturity at 6-8 weeks, their nutritional needs shift from growth to egg production. Layer feeds provide reduced but adequate protein alongside increased calcium (typically 2.5-3.5%) needed for daily eggshell formation. Coturnix hens can lay nearly an egg per day, making proper nutrition critical.
Tips
- Transition gradually over 5-7 days by mixing increasing amounts of layer feed with starter feed
- Monitor egg quality during the switch; thin or soft shells indicate insufficient calcium
- If using chicken layer feed, verify protein content is at least 20% — many are only 16%
