Maintain Strict Sanitation
5
Clean and disinfect quail housing, feeders, and waterers on a regular schedule. Remove soiled bedding and manure at least every 2-3 days, replacing with fresh, dry bedding such as pine shavings or sand. Use a poultry-safe disinfectant (e.g., Virkon S or diluted bleach at 1:10) on all surfaces during deep cleans.
Why It Works
Manure accumulation drives ammonia levels above the safe threshold of 25 ppm, causing respiratory damage in quail. Coccidia oocysts and bacterial pathogens like Salmonella thrive in warm, moist litter. Frequent removal breaks the parasite life cycle and keeps pathogen loads below infection thresholds. Dry conditions further inhibit bacterial and parasitic reproduction.
Tips
- Deep-clean the entire enclosure with disinfectant at least once per month
- Keep bedding dry at all times — moisture is the single biggest disease accelerator
- Scrub waterers daily to prevent biofilm buildup, which harbors bacteria
