Control Pests: Rodents, Insects, and Wild Birds

4

Seal quail housing against rodents and wild birds using hardware cloth (1/2-inch or smaller mesh). Store all feed in airtight metal or heavy-duty plastic bins. Set snap traps or bait stations around the perimeter — never inside the quail enclosure. Inspect housing weekly for gaps, holes, or signs of pest activity.

Why It Works

Rodents carry Salmonella, Leptospirosis, and parasites directly into quail enclosures through droppings and contact. Wild birds transmit Avian Influenza, Newcastle disease, and mites. Insects such as darkling beetles harbor tapeworm larvae and other parasites that quail ingest. Eliminating pest access breaks these transmission pathways and protects both feed quality and flock health.

Tips

  • Never use rodent poison inside or near quail enclosures — quail can consume poisoned bait or poisoned rodents
  • Use food-grade diatomaceous earth around enclosure perimeters to deter crawling insects
  • Remove spilled feed daily, as it is the primary attractant for rodents and wild birds
