Avoid Overcrowding

5

Provide a minimum of 1 square foot (930 cm²) of floor space per adult Coturnix quail. For breeding groups or flight pens, increase to 1.5-2 square feet per bird. Count your flock and measure your enclosure to verify density before adding new birds.

Why It Works

Overcrowding elevates stress hormones (corticosterone), which suppresses the immune system and makes quail more susceptible to disease. High-density conditions also accelerate pathogen transmission — one sick bird in a packed cage can infect the entire flock within days. Adequate space keeps litter drier, reduces feather pecking and cannibalism, and allows subordinate birds to escape aggression.

Tips

  • Calculate density by dividing total floor area by number of birds — remove excess birds if below 1 sq ft each
  • Separate males from each other if aggression increases, as fighting creates wounds that invite infection
  • More space consistently correlates with better egg production, lower mortality, and fewer disease outbreaks
