Separate your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks

4

Many smart home devices (especially older ones) only connect to the 2.4 GHz band, not 5 GHz. If your router combines both into one network name, devices may try to connect to 5 GHz and fail. Create separate network names for each band or ensure your router has a "smart connect" feature that handles this automatically.

Why It Works

2.4 GHz has longer range and better wall penetration — ideal for smart home devices throughout the house. 5 GHz is faster but shorter range. Many IoT devices simply cannot see 5 GHz networks, causing mysterious connection failures.

Tips

  • Name them distinctly: "HomeWifi" for 5 GHz (phones, laptops) and "HomeWifi-IoT" for 2.4 GHz (smart devices)
  • When setting up a new smart device, connect your phone to the 2.4 GHz network first
  • Some modern routers handle band steering automatically — check your router's settings
  • If a device fails to connect during setup, this is the most likely cause
