Use Thread or Zigbee devices for more reliable connections
4
Devices using Thread (newer standard) or Zigbee (established standard) create their own mesh network separate from Wi-Fi. Each device acts as a relay, strengthening the network as you add more. Thread is supported by Apple HomePod Mini, Google Nest, and Amazon Echo as border routers.
Why It Works
Thread and Zigbee devices do not compete with phones and laptops for Wi-Fi bandwidth. Their dedicated mesh networks are self-healing — if one device fails, traffic routes around it automatically. More devices actually improve reliability rather than degrading it.
Tips
- Thread is the newer, more energy-efficient standard and is part of Matter
- Zigbee requires a hub (SmartThings, Hue Bridge); Thread uses your smart speaker as a border router
- Eve, Nanoleaf, and Yale make popular Thread-enabled devices
- Thread is especially useful for battery-powered devices like sensors and locks
