Discuss AI privacy and what not to share
5
Teach children that anything typed into an AI tool is stored on a server and could be seen by others. Never share: real name, school name, address, phone number, photos of themselves, or personal information about friends or family. Treat AI conversations like talking to a stranger.
Why It Works
Children naturally overshare when a tool responds conversationally. The "stranger" analogy maps to safety rules they already understand. Establishing this boundary early prevents data exposure as children use AI more independently.
Tips
- Practice with scenarios: "What would you tell a stranger at the park?" — same rules apply to AI
- Explain that AI companies may use conversations to improve their products
- Some AI tools allow conversation history deletion — show children how to do this
- Review conversations periodically with younger children to reinforce good habits
