How to teach children about AI and help them use it responsibly?

Sit with your child and try AI tools together. Ask ChatGPT or Claude a question your child is curious about, then discuss the answer: Was it accurate? How could we verify it? What did the AI get wrong? Frame AI as a tool like a calculator — useful but not a replacement for thinking.

Help children understand that using AI to learn is different from using AI to cheat. Using AI to explain a concept they do not understand is learning. Using AI to write their essay for them is cheating. The test: "Did I learn something, or did the AI just do my work?"

Teach children that anything typed into an AI tool is stored on a server and could be seen by others. Never share: real name, school name, address, phone number, photos of themselves, or personal information about friends or family. Treat AI conversations like talking to a stranger.

Several AI tools are designed specifically for children. Khan Academy's Khanmigo guides students through problems without giving answers. Google Gemini has safety filters for younger users. Scratch (MIT) teaches coding logic through visual programming that introduces computational thinking.
