Broad Breasted White
4
Choose Broad Breasted White turkeys for maximum meat yield in the shortest time. Toms reach 38-45 lbs and hens 20-25 lbs in 16-20 weeks on a 28% protein starter transitioning to 20% grower feed. This breed accounts for roughly 99% of commercial turkey production in the United States due to its exceptional feed-to-meat conversion ratio.
Why It Works
Broad Breasted Whites were selectively bred for oversized breast muscles, producing significantly more white meat per bird than any heritage breed. Their rapid growth rate means lower total feed costs per pound of finished meat, making them the most economical choice for backyard meat production at scale.
Tips
- Provide at least 5 sq ft per bird indoors since their heavy frame causes leg and joint stress in cramped conditions
- Plan for artificial insemination as this breed cannot mate naturally due to their breast size
- Process on schedule at 16-20 weeks because delayed processing leads to increased leg problems and heart failure
- Keep litter dry and clean to prevent breast blisters, which downgrade carcass quality
