Standard Bronze
Raise Standard Bronze turkeys as a hardy heritage breed suited for pasture-based meat production. Toms mature to 20-25 lbs and hens to 12-16 lbs over 24-28 weeks. This breed predates the Broad Breasted varieties and was the dominant American farm turkey from the 1700s through the mid-1900s. It is recognized by the American Poultry Association and listed on The Livestock Conservancy's watch list.
Why It Works
Standard Bronze turkeys breed naturally, forage effectively, and tolerate a wider range of weather conditions than commercial breeds. Their slower growth produces denser, more flavorful meat with a balanced distribution of white and dark portions. Strong legs and healthy cardiovascular systems give them lifespans of 5-7 years, making them viable as breeding stock year after year.
Tips
- Allow at least 100 sq ft of pasture per bird for adequate foraging and exercise
- Supplement pasture with 20% protein feed at roughly 0.5 lbs per bird per day
- Start poults on 28% protein game bird starter for the first 8 weeks
- Expect processing yields around 65-70% of live weight, lower than Broad Breasted breeds
