Adjust Space by Breed Type

4

Scale space allocations based on breed size and activity level. Heritage breeds (Bourbon Red, Narragansett, Standard Bronze) need 10+ square feet indoors and 100+ square feet outdoors per bird due to their active foraging nature. Broad Breasted varieties need 6-8 square feet indoors and 20-25 square feet outdoors, as they are less mobile and reach market weight at 14-20 weeks.

Why It Works

Heritage turkeys are lighter (hens 10-14 lbs, toms 20-28 lbs), more active, and better fliers than Broad Breasted types (hens 16-20 lbs, toms 30-45 lbs). Heritage breeds forage extensively and become stressed in confined spaces. Broad Breasted birds are calmer but their heavier frames make them prone to leg problems if space is too tight for movement. Matching space to breed prevents injuries, behavioral issues, and poor weight gain.

Tips

  • Heritage breeds need taller fencing (5-6 feet) or covered runs since they can fly to heights of 25 feet
  • Broad Breasted birds benefit from low roosts (1-2 feet) and ramps to protect their joints
  • When mixing breeds, calculate space based on the most active breed in the flock
