Minimum Coop Space per Turkey

5

Allocate 6-10 square feet of indoor coop space per adult turkey. Measure the interior floor area, subtract space occupied by feeders, waterers, and nest boxes, then divide by the number of birds. In cold climates where turkeys spend extended periods indoors, aim for 10 square feet per bird.

Why It Works

Turkeys are large birds, with hens averaging 15-20 lbs and toms 25-45 lbs depending on breed. Insufficient floor space causes stress, feather picking, and increased aggression. Adequate space allows birds to move freely to food and water, reduces ammonia buildup from litter, and supports proper ventilation around each bird.

Tips

  • Measure usable floor space only, excluding areas blocked by equipment or structural supports
  • Provide at least 1 linear foot of feeder space and 1 waterer per 6 birds inside the coop
  • Ensure at least 1 square foot of ventilation opening per 10 square feet of floor space to manage moisture and ammonia
