Roosting Space and Vertical Layout

4

Install sturdy roosting bars inside the coop, allowing 15-18 inches of linear roost space per turkey. Position roosts 2-3 feet off the ground with a ramp or stepped arrangement for heavy breeds. Use 2x4 lumber placed with the wide (4-inch) side up so turkeys can rest their keel bone flat.

Why It Works

Turkeys instinctively roost off the ground at night to avoid predators. Roosting keeps birds off damp litter, reducing breast blisters and bumblefoot. Utilizing vertical space effectively increases the coop's usable capacity without expanding the footprint, since floor space beneath roosts remains available during the day.

Tips

  • Space roost bars at least 18-24 inches apart horizontally and stagger heights to prevent upper birds from soiling those below
  • Build roosts strong enough to hold 25-45 lbs per bird using brackets or wall-mounted supports rated for the load
  • Place a droppings board or tray 6-12 inches below roosts for easier cleaning and better litter management
