Dry and Draft-Free Environment

5

Construct the coop with a leak-proof roof, sealed wall joints, and draft barriers at floor level. Lay 4-6 inches of absorbent bedding such as pine shavings or chopped straw, and replace it when damp. Block wind at bird height while allowing airflow above through upper vents.

Why It Works

Turkeys tolerate cold down to about 0°F if they stay dry, but dampness combined with drafts causes rapid heat loss and increases the risk of respiratory infections and frostbite on snoods and caruncles. Dry bedding absorbs moisture from droppings and maintains a healthier microenvironment at floor level.

Tips

  • Check bedding moisture weekly by squeezing a handful — if it clumps, replace it
  • Slope the roof or install gutters to direct rainwater away from the coop entrance
  • In winter, add a deeper bedding layer (8-10 inches) for extra insulation
