Secure, Predator-Proof Structure

5

Build or retrofit a coop with solid walls, a lockable door, and 1/2-inch hardware cloth over all windows and vents. Standard chicken wire is too weak — raccoons, foxes, and weasels can tear through it. Install two-step latches on every door, since raccoons can open simple hook latches.

Why It Works

Predators are the leading cause of turkey flock losses in backyard setups. A fully enclosed structure with hardware cloth and secure latches eliminates the most common entry points. Sealing gaps as small as 1 inch prevents weasels, which can kill an entire flock in a single night.

Tips

  • Inspect the coop perimeter monthly for holes, rot, or loose hardware cloth
  • Bury hardware cloth 12 inches underground or add an apron to deter digging predators
  • Use padlocks or carabiner-style latches that require two motions to open
