Adequate Ventilation

5

Install vents near the roofline on at least two opposing walls, positioned above roosting height. Cover all openings with 1/2-inch hardware cloth. Aim for a total vent area of roughly 1 square foot per 10 square feet of floor space to ensure sufficient air exchange year-round.

Why It Works

Turkey droppings produce ammonia and moisture that accumulate in enclosed spaces. Ammonia levels above 25 ppm damage respiratory tissue and increase disease susceptibility. High-mounted vents create natural convection — warm, moist air rises and exits while fresh air enters lower, without drafting directly on roosting birds.

Tips

  • If you smell ammonia when entering the coop, ventilation is insufficient
  • In summer, add adjustable lower vents for cross-breeze
  • Never fully seal vents in winter — moisture buildup is more dangerous than cold air
