Supervise Ranging or Install a Secure Perimeter
3
Allow turkeys to free-range only under direct supervision or within a securely fenced area. In regions with coyotes, foxes, or stray dogs, unsupervised open ranging leads to significant losses. A fenced pasture at least 4 feet high with an electric top wire provides a practical middle ground between confinement and full free-range.
Why It Works
Daytime predators such as coyotes, hawks, and dogs are opportunistic and tend to avoid human presence. Supervised ranging leverages this to keep turkeys safe while they forage. A secure perimeter fence with an electrified top strand deters climbing and jumping predators, reducing losses without requiring constant oversight.
Tips
- A single electric wire at 4-5 feet above ground deters most climbing predators at low cost
- Supervise turkeys during the first few days of ranging to help them learn their territory boundaries
- Assess local predator pressure before choosing between supervision and fencing -- areas with aerial predators may also need overhead netting
