Train Turkeys to Return to the Coop at Dusk

4

Establish a consistent evening routine to train turkeys to return to the coop at dusk. Use a specific call or whistle paired with a small handful of scratch grains or cracked corn offered inside the coop each evening. Begin this training from the first day turkeys are allowed outside.

Why It Works

Turkeys are creatures of habit and respond strongly to food-based conditioning. Within 5-7 days of consistent routine, most flocks learn to return on cue. This ensures turkeys are secured before dark -- the highest-risk period for predation. Turkeys that roost in trees or refuse to return are extremely vulnerable to owls and raccoons.

Tips

  • Start with short ranging sessions close to the coop and gradually extend distance and duration over 1-2 weeks
  • Use the same distinct call or whistle every time -- turkeys learn audio cues quickly
  • Begin the return routine 30-45 minutes before sunset to allow time for stragglers
