Turkey Finisher Feed (16 Weeks to Processing)
4
Switch to a 16-18% protein finisher feed from 16 weeks until processing. Transition gradually over 5-7 days by blending finisher with grower feed. Finisher feed contains higher energy and lower protein, directing nutrients toward final weight gain and fat deposition that improves meat quality.
Why It Works
At 16 weeks, the turkey's skeletal frame is largely complete and additional protein yields diminishing returns. The higher energy-to-protein ratio promotes intramuscular fat development, producing juicier meat. Broad-breasted toms typically reach 30-40 pounds by 20-24 weeks, while hens finish at 14-20 pounds.
Tips
- Heritage breeds grow slower and may stay on grower feed until processing at 24-28 weeks
- A broad-breasted turkey consumes roughly 70-100 pounds of feed total from hatch to processing
- Withdraw medicated feed according to label instructions before processing, typically 5-7 days
