Constant Access to Fresh Water

Provide unlimited access to clean, fresh water at all times. An adult turkey drinks approximately 1 pint per day in moderate weather and significantly more in heat. Clean and refill waterers daily to prevent bacterial growth. Use waterers sized for turkeys, as chick-sized waterers tip over easily.

Why It Works

Water is essential for feed digestion, nutrient absorption, and body temperature regulation. Turkeys that lack water for even a few hours reduce feed intake, slowing growth. Dehydration in hot weather can cause heat stress and death within hours, as turkeys are particularly heat-sensitive above 85°F (29°C).

Tips

• Use heated waterer bases or swap water frequently to prevent freezing in winter
• Place waterers on raised platforms or wire to keep litter out of the water
• Add electrolytes to water during heat waves or after transport stress to aid recovery
