Colony Housing Space
4
Provide a minimum of 10 sq ft (approximately 1 sq m) of floor space per adult rabbit in colony housing setups. Colonies allow natural movement, social interaction, and foraging behavior, but require significantly more space than individual caging to reduce territorial aggression.
Why It Works
In a shared enclosure, rabbits establish a social hierarchy. Without enough room, subordinate animals cannot escape dominant ones, leading to stress, fur pulling, and bite wounds. At 10 sq ft per head, each rabbit has space to retreat, rest separately, and access food and water without conflict.
Tips
- Add vertical elements like shelves and platforms to increase usable space and provide escape routes
- Place visual barriers (boxes, dividers) so rabbits can hide from each other
- Monitor colonies closely during the first 48 hours after introducing new animals
