Constant Fresh, Clean Water
5
Ensure every rabbit has continuous access to fresh, clean water. Check and refill water containers at least twice daily, and more frequently during hot weather when consumption can double.
Why It Works
Water is critical for digestion, nutrient absorption, and thermoregulation. A rabbit can consume 50-150 ml of water per kg of body weight daily. Dehydration leads to GI stasis, reduced feed intake, and can become life-threatening within 24 hours.
Tips
- Heavy ceramic crocks are harder to tip but must be cleaned daily to prevent algae and bacterial growth
- Sipper-tube bottles keep water cleaner but can freeze in winter or malfunction; check the ball valve regularly
- In freezing conditions, swap out frozen bottles every few hours or use heated water bottle bases
