High-Quality Commercial Pellets
5
Feed a balanced commercial rabbit pellet as the dietary staple. Select pellets with 16-18% protein for growers and lactating does, and 14-16% protein for maintenance or non-breeding adults. Follow manufacturer feeding guidelines, typically free-choice for growers and measured portions for adult breeders.
Why It Works
Commercial pellets deliver consistent, complete nutrition including vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that rabbits cannot reliably obtain from forage alone. Pellets with 18% or higher crude fiber support healthy gut motility and reduce the risk of enteritis.
Tips
- Check the label for a minimum of 18% crude fiber and verify the first ingredient is a grass or alfalfa meal
- Store pellets in a sealed container away from heat and moisture; discard any that smell musty or appear discolored
- Transition between pellet brands gradually over 7-10 days to prevent digestive upset
