Wire Bottom Cages (Hanging/Stacked)

5

Build or buy wire mesh cages (typically 30"x36" for does, 24"x30" for bucks) using 14-gauge galvanized wire with 1/2"x1" floor mesh. Hang cages from a frame or stack them in tiers with dropping pans between levels. Urine and feces fall through the wire floor, keeping rabbits clean and reducing disease risk.

Why It Works

Wire floors eliminate constant contact with waste, which is the primary cause of coccidiosis and other intestinal parasites in rabbits. The open mesh also provides superior airflow compared to solid enclosures, reducing ammonia buildup. This system is the standard in commercial rabbitries because it minimizes daily cleaning labor while maximizing sanitation.

Tips

  • Provide a solid resting mat (tile, plywood, or plastic) covering about one-third of the floor to prevent sore hocks, especially for heavier breeds
  • Use J-feeders and automatic nipple waterers mounted outside the cage to save interior space and reduce contamination
  • Space stacked tiers at least 12-14 inches apart to allow adequate ventilation and easy tray access
