Utilize Larger Pasture Areas

4

Give 2-4 miniature goats access to at least 1/4 acre of pasture for natural foraging and browsing. Verify that all pasture plants are non-toxic before allowing access, removing known hazards like rhododendron, azalea, and wild cherry.

Why It Works

Goats are browsers rather than grazers, preferring weeds, shrubs, and tree leaves over grass. Larger pasture areas let them express this natural feeding behavior, supplement their diet with diverse forage, and reduce hay and grain costs. Dispersed manure across a wider area also lowers internal parasite concentration compared to small confinement lots.

Tips

  • Conduct a pasture plant survey before turnout to identify and remove toxic species
  • Supplement browse with quality hay since pasture alone rarely meets full nutritional needs
  • Monitor pasture condition and rest areas when forage height drops below 3-4 inches
