Allocate Separate Space for Bucks

4

House mature bucks in a dedicated enclosure away from does and wethers, providing the same 10-15 sq ft indoor and 200-250 sq ft outdoor space per animal. Use heavy-duty 5-foot fencing with reinforced gates, as bucks are significantly stronger and more motivated to escape than does.

Why It Works

Bucks produce a strong musk odor from scent glands that can taint milk if they share housing with dairy does. They also display aggressive mounting behavior year-round and may injure smaller does or kids. Separation allows controlled breeding by introducing bucks to does only during planned breeding windows.

Tips

  • Position the buck pen downwind and at least 30 feet from the milking area to prevent odor transfer
  • Keep at least two bucks or a buck with a wether companion since goats are herd animals
  • Double-check all gate latches and fence joints regularly as bucks will ram and test weak points
